Mini Splits: What Is a Ductless Heat Pump?

A ductless heat pump — commonly called a mini split — is a heating and cooling system that works without traditional ductwork. It consists of a compact outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor air handlers mounted on the wall or ceiling. Each indoor unit can be controlled independently, giving you room-by-room comfort and control.

They're especially popular here in the Pacific Northwest, where the climate calls for efficient heating most of the year but cooling matters too during our warm summers.

Benefits of Ductless Heat Pumps

Quick, Non-Invasive Installation

No ductwork means less disruption to your home or business. Most installations are completed in a single day.

Outstanding Energy Efficiency

Ductless heat pumps are among the most efficient heating and cooling systems available, resulting in lower monthly energy bills.

Utility Rebates Available

Many systems qualify for significant rebates through Puget Sound Energy and other local programs, reducing your upfront investment.

Quiet Operation

Ductless systems run quietly in the background, so you stay comfortable without the noise of traditional HVAC equipment.

Flexible Zoning

Flexible Zoning — Control the temperature room by room, so you're only conditioning the spaces you're actually using.

Improved Indoor Air Quality

Without ducts to collect dust, debris, and allergens, ductless systems help keep the air in your home or business cleaner.

Our Installation Process

Step 1:
Step 1:

Heat Load Calculation

Before anything else, we calculate the exact heating and cooling needs of your space. Using square footage, insulation levels, window size, and air infiltration, we determine the right size system for your home or business — not too big, not too small.

Step 2:
Step 2:

Airflow Planning

With the right size confirmed, we map out where each indoor unit will be placed to maximize air distribution and comfort throughout the room. Tempered air doesn't travel through walls and around corners, so getting this right is critical.
Step 3:
Step 3:

Location & Placement

Location can make or break a ductless system. We carefully avoid common placement mistakes — like positioning units in rooms with tall ceilings, blowing air directly on occupants, or placing heads where they can't adequately cover the space.
Step 4:
Step 4:

Professional Installation

Our technicians handle every detail, from properly leveling indoor units and setting outdoor pads, to flaring refrigerant connections, pressure testing, system evacuation, and clean line cover runs for a polished finished look.

Step 5:
Step 5:

Final Inspection & Walkthrough

Once the system is up and running, we walk you through the operation, answer your questions, and make sure everything performs exactly as expected before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ

What is a mini-split (ductless heat pump) system?

A mini-split, also known as a ductless heat pump or ductless mini-split system, is a highly efficient heating and cooling solution that works without the need for ductwork. It consists of an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air-handling units (called "heads") connected by refrigerant lines. Mini-splits can both heat and cool individual rooms or zones, making them ideal for home additions, garages, older homes without existing ductwork, and any space where comfort control is needed.

How energy efficient are mini-split systems?

Mini-split systems are among the most energy-efficient heating and cooling options available. They typically achieve SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) ratings of 20 or higher — well above the minimum required for standard central AC systems. Because they deliver conditioned air directly to individual zones without duct losses (which can account for 25-30% of energy waste in traditional systems), mini-splits can significantly reduce your monthly energy bills. Many models also qualify for utility rebates and federal tax credits, making them an excellent long-term investment.

Can a mini-split heat my home in cold weather?

Yes! Modern mini-split heat pumps are designed to operate efficiently even in very cold temperatures. Many cold-climate mini-split models (such as those from Mitsubishi, Daikin, and Fujitsu) can provide effective heating down to -13°F (-25°C) or lower. Here in the Pacific Northwest, our mild winters are perfectly suited for mini-split heating. In fact, mini-splits are often more cost-effective to operate than electric resistance heating, gas furnaces, or baseboard heaters — especially given Washington State's relatively low electricity rates.

How many indoor units (zones) can a mini-split system support?

Mini-split systems are available in both single-zone and multi-zone configurations. A single-zone system pairs one outdoor unit with one indoor unit, perfect for conditioning a single room or space. Multi-zone systems can connect one outdoor unit to multiple indoor heads — typically anywhere from 2 to 8 zones depending on the system capacity. This allows you to independently control the temperature in multiple rooms or areas of your home or business, providing personalized comfort and the ability to turn off cooling or heating in unoccupied zones to save energy.

How long does mini-split installation take?

Most single-zone mini-split installations can be completed in one day — typically 4 to 8 hours depending on the complexity and location of the installation. Multi-zone systems with multiple indoor heads may require 1 to 2 days. Since mini-splits don't require ductwork, installation is far less invasive than traditional HVAC systems. Our certified technicians at Smith Mechanical handle everything from mounting the indoor and outdoor units to making the electrical connections and testing the system to ensure optimal performance before they leave.
